Canton, Georgia

Canton is the county seat of Cherokee County, set in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains about 40 miles north of downtown Atlanta by way of Interstate 575 and Interstate 75. The Etowah River runs directly through the middle of the city, flowing east to west and shaping much of Canton's park and trail system. From SRA's office in Tucker, Canton is roughly a 45 to 50 minute drive along I-285 and I-575, making it a manageable commute for buyers who want more room and a mountain-adjacent setting north of the city.

From Cherokee Court House to Mill Town

The settlement that became Canton started out known simply as Cherokee Court House. It was incorporated as Etowah in 1833 when it was named the Cherokee County seat, then renamed Canton the following year, a nod to the Chinese city of Guangzhou (then commonly called Canton in English) made by residents who hoped to build a local silk industry. That silk venture never took hold, but the town found its footing in other industries over the decades, including marble finishing, dairy, and poultry. Union troops burned Canton during General Sherman's 1864 campaign, and the city rebuilt afterward as a cotton mill town, becoming known for Canton Cotton Mills and its "Canton Denim" product line, which continued production into 1981. Some of that era's civic architecture survives today, including Edgewater Hall, a 1922 Georgian Revival building that now serves as City Hall.

Along the Etowah River

Canton's Heritage Park opened in 2004 as the first phase of the Etowah River Greenway, adding about 30 acres of trails and a natural amphitheater along the riverbank. A second phase added roughly 60 more acres with fields for soccer, softball, baseball, and tennis, and the Etowah River Trail now links several of the city's major parks into one connected system. The river itself supports tubing and kayaking, and nearby Hickory Log Creek Reservoir adds another spot for water recreation outside the city center.

Downtown and Community Life

Main Street in downtown Canton has grown into a genuine dining and shopping district, with more than a dozen restaurants alongside bakeries, coffee shops, and boutiques, plus newer additions like The Mill on Etowah for entertainment. The Historic Canton Theatre, owned by the city, hosts concerts, live theater, and film screenings throughout the year. Community life revolves around a full calendar of events, including monthly First Friday gatherings, the River Rock Concert Series, a seasonal Saturday farmers market, the Taste of Canton, and the Canton Multicultural Festival, along with public art projects that have brought murals to Railroad Street and Lee Street.

Housing Character

Canton's housing ranges from older homes near the historic downtown, many dating to the city's mill-era growth, to brick ranch homes from the mid-twentieth century, and on to the extensive newer subdivisions that have filled in along the I-575 corridor as Cherokee County has grown into one of the region's fastest-expanding areas. Buyers can find everything from established, tree-shaded streets close to Main Street to newer master-planned communities farther from the center, a range that mirrors just how much Canton has grown since the turn of the century.
