In the late nineteenth century, the Southern Granite Company began large-scale quarrying of the mountain's granite, at its peak turning out tens of thousands of paving stones and thousands of feet of curbing a day, and recruiting skilled stonecutters from England, Scotland, Sweden, Norway, Wales, and Italy. That quarrying industry shaped the town's economy for decades and left its mark on Main Street, which the National Register of Historic Places recognized in 2000 as a rare surviving example of a historic railroad town.

A Compact Village of Early Twentieth-Century Buildings

Stone Mountain's historic core is compact and walkable, built up mostly in the decades bracketing 1900. Main Street retains storefronts from that era, many with their original facades intact, now home to shops and restaurants rather than the banks, hardware stores, and livery operations that once filled them. The Stone Mountain Inn, built in 1905, has anchored the north end of Main Street for well over a century. A short walk away, the old Trolley Car Barn, built in 1913 by the Georgia Railway and Power Company, now houses ART Station, a contemporary arts center that has adapted the building's industrial bones for gallery and performance space. Around the historic core, residential streets mix early bungalows and cottages with later infill construction, giving the small city a broader range of home styles than its size might suggest.

Living Beside the Mountain

The city's defining feature is impossible to miss: the granite dome of Stone Mountain itself rises just beyond the edge of downtown, and Stone Mountain Park wraps around much of the city with walking trails, a lake, and open lawn space. Within the city itself, the Stone Mountain-Sue Kellogg Library anchors Leon Street, and residents also have access to smaller neighborhood green spaces scattered through downtown. The scale of the park next door means that a walk to the mountain's base, or a loop on its walk-up trail, is a short trip from nearly anywhere in the city.

Stone Mountain Village keeps a genuinely small-town character, with Main Street serving as its commercial spine. Longtime and newer restaurants line the street, including the Sycamore Grill and Cherokee Rose BBQ, alongside independent shops and a Farmers Market that draws residents from the surrounding area. The village hosts community festivals and events throughout the year that make use of its historic downtown blocks and proximity to the park. That combination of walkable Main Street businesses and quick access to the larger park sets Stone Mountain apart from many of its DeKalb County neighbors.
