An 1881 fire destroyed every Main Street store but one, and merchant John Brogdon's rebuilding effort grew into what was, for a time, the largest store between Atlanta and Gainesville. Suwanee incorporated as a city on February 25, 1949. George Pierce Park, built in 1984, was an early anchor, and 2004 alone brought the opening of Suwanee Creek Park, Town Center Park, PlayTown Suwanee, and a three-mile extension of the Suwanee Creek Greenway, with PlayTown itself built in a single week by more than a thousand community volunteers. Sims Lake Park followed in 2008, and White Street Park is home to Harvest Farm, a large organic community garden, and The Orchard, a community fruit orchard added in 2017. A 25-acre addition, DeLay Nature Park, opened alongside Town Center on Main in 2024, continuing the city's pattern of pairing new development with new parkland.
